Arlo Herman

January 8, 1923 — December 7, 2016

Arlo William Herman, a lifelong resident of Dillon and Beaverhead County, passed away in the early hours of December 7, 2016. He spent his last evening in the loving company of his family and caregivers. He was born to Joseph Killian and Ingeborg Syrstad Hermann on Jan. 08, 1923. He grew up in an agricultural setting, but vowed to not make it his future. In 1941, following graduation from Beaverhead High School, he began his career in the car business working on the wash rack for Joe White at Montana Auto Sales. He joined the Navy in 1942 because, "they had better chow" and served in the South Pacific as a Machinist's Mate on an LCT. History prevented his having to be part of a beachhead landing on the shores of Japan. He received his "Busted Duck" and was Honorably Discharged from the Navy in 1946. Returning to Dillon, he resumed his career in the car business, scooped up the prettiest girl in Beaverhead County, and on Aug. 03,1946 married June Willey. He moved into the role of a Parts Manager in 1951, went to Paul's Chevrolet in 1955 and became a partner in the business in 1958. Arlo and June retired on the same day in 1986 and took to travelling, playing cards and hosting their many friends and family at their home in Dillon and their cabin in the Grasshopper. June and Arlo celebrated their 70th Wedding Anniversary this year. Arlo always had a good sense of humor and a smile on his face. He will be remembered as kind, generous and nurturing. He had collected stamps from the time he was 8 or 10 years old and was keen to share his knowledge with young collectors. He maintained his hobby into his late 80's. He was preceded in death by his brother Joe Herman (WWII Europe), his parents and his sister Charlotte Byers. He is survived by his wife June, sons Tracy (Vanessa) Herman, Spokane Valley, WA, Rich (Erin) Herman, Surprise, AZ, and David Herman, Dillon, MT.; grandchildren Scott Herman, Breeanne (Jeff) Coots, Kelly (Aaron) Branderhorst, Kenda (Tom) Caffrey, Josh Herman, Tobie (Mark) McDonnell, Sam (Jennifer) Buchanan; great grandchildren Ava and Kieran Branderhorst, Taylor Herman, Zachary and Ashlyn Coots, Jace and Carter Buchanan, Zeke Douma, Colter Buchanan and Brooklyn Lundberg; and great great grandchild Piper Buchanan. A celebration of life will be held at Brundage Funeral Home on Sat. Dec. 17, at 1:00 pm. Commital of ashes in Mountain View Cemetery will occur at a future date.
