George Clemow

We are sad to announce the passing of George Clemow, age 85 of Dillon, Montana. While truly unexpected, he passed away peacefully at home while sitting in his chair reading a book. He is survived by his children, Chris and Beth, and grandchildren Samantha and Loreen. He is also survived by his siblings RoseAnn, Bea, Diane, and Tom. He is preceded in death by his wife Aspascia "Bobbie" Clemow and sisters Irene and Ruth. George was an avid fisherman (having recently returned from a trip to Alaska), a voracious reader, a skilled pinochle player, and loved board games, occasionally 'inventing' Scrabble words. He was a member of the Beaverhead County Planning Board and was active in the Senior Center, Eastern Star, Masons, and Elks Lodge. George was born in Dillon in 1933 to Tom and Rose Clemow. and grew up on the family ranch outside of Jackson. Following graduation from Beaverhead County High School, he obtained a bachelor’s degree from Montana State University and was commissioned in the US Army. Following military service, he briefly returned to the Tom Clemow family ranch before becoming a high school teacher in Hamilton. It was here he met his future wife, Bobbie, and after a brief courtship they married and decided to return to the Big Hole and start their own ranch. While ranching consumed most of their time, George and Bobbie did raise two wonderful, headstrong, and independent children, one of whom is writing this obituary. George loved to camp, hunt, and fish, often turning the latter into a family challenge to see who could catch the most for him to bring to the next Elks night. Upon retirement and moving to Dillon, George stayed active in the community and he and Bobbie traveled to see their children and grandchildren in Oregon and Florida. George also remained active in the outdoors and continued to fish and go on family outings. In the most recent years, George continued his yearly sojourns to Florida to visit his daughter and family, to fish, and to watch spring training baseball. Memorials are suggested to Beaverhead Senior Citizens, Jackson School, Beaverhead Museum, or Shrine Children’s Hospital in Spokane.
