James “Jimmy” Womack died in Missoula’s Saint Patrick’s Hospital on Friday, May 13. He had been in ill health for the past 14 months. Jim was 77 years old. He was born to MG John and Vivian Womack (deceased) in Albuquerque, New Mexico on May 18th, 1944. After his father was released from active duty, his family settled in Belgrade where his father taught school. They then relocated to Dillon where Jim attended Dillon Schools and graduated in 1963 from the Beaverhead County High School. Jim and his younger brother Jon D Womack were athletes at BCHS and played together on the Beaver football and basketball teams. Tragedy struck in 1971 when Jon Womack died from brain cancer while in law school at UM at the age of 24. Jim was never the same after this devastating loss. Jim was also preceded in death by his brother, Joe, who died from complications of Type 1 diabetes in 2000. Jack is the only remaining member of this Womack family. He lives in Marietta, Georgia. He married Kathleen Quane in Anaconda in 1967. They had one son, Jon Womack, who lives in Dillon. They later divorced and Kathy preceded him in death in March of 2022. Jim Womack worked in a variety of jobs; he joined the Montana National Guard in 1963 and retired in 1976. He worked for The Montana Highway Commission, Mountain Plains of Montana, and in 1987, he moved his family to Bozeman to reopen the Army Navy Store. Years later, he returned to Dillon and bought the Skyline Trailer Court which he was operating until his death. Jim was one of a kind, he broke the mold. He gave everyone crazy, usually very inappropriate nicknames… family included – they can not be repeated here. He was a talented “fix it” guy. Had an incredible work ethic and loved a good laugh. He will be missed. He told me that he knew the end was near and he sure as hell hoped it would be before the 2024 election. He loved customizing cars with crazy accessories and colors. It was his hobby. Jim is survived by his son Jon and his wife Kim; Grandson Zade and granddaughter Lacey both of Dillon; as well as his brother, Jack, and his wife, Kathy, of Georgia. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews as well as his lifelong friends Pierce and Donna Rouse. There is no service being planned. For those of you lucky or unlucky enough to get one of his crazy nicknames please raise a glass and remember this very interesting man.
