John Garry

May 14, 1948 — October 31, 2022

Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on May 14,1948, to John and Arlene Garry, John Arthur Garry became the eldest of three children. His K-12 education was in Dillon, and John received a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Montana State University. He later attended UCLA to complete his masters in computer languages. His entire career of 42 years was spent with Northrup Grumman in El Segundo, CA working as an electrical engineer on numerous airplane prototypes for the military. His team’s task was to stress all parts of the planes. He and his wife, Elizabeth, returned to John’s home in 2015 where he immediately became part of the community by his participation in city government through the city council. At the time of his death, he remained on the boards of the Dillon Library, Beaverhead County Museum, the Federal Credit Union, was instrumental in the building of the Bike Walk SW and an active member of the Dillon Lion’s Club. Dubbed by some as “The Prince of Puns”, John had a pun for every situation. His sense of humor would have appreciated this description of his job. Engineer--Someone who does precision guesswork based on unreliable data provided by those of questionable knowledge! Always a gentleman, his warm smile and witty personality will be missed by all as he passed early in the morning of October 31, 2022. He is survived by his wife, Liz, sister Laurie (Jim) Hagenbarth of Dillon, and brother David (Nancy) Garry of Beaverton, Oregon, several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. No services are planned at this time, but there will be a “Celebration of Life” in the spring. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to any of the entities mentioned or a charity of the donor’s choice.
