Patrick, “Pat”, “P.J.” John Mahoney Sr was born to Lawrence and Zora Mahoney on 8.6.1932 at
Oceanlake, Oregon. He was the 5 th of 8 children. The family moved to Portland when he was a young
boy after his father passed away. His mother remarried and 2 more sisters were added to the family, 2 more siblings were born of that marriage, which made 12 children, in all. P.J. attended various schools, and worked at many jobs, from selling bread, to summer work on ranches and farms out in Central and Eastern Oregon. When he was 18, he joined the Army Air Corps and was sent to Germany where he served as a military policeman, during the Korean War. When returning home, he met and married Sherrill Morgan. They had 5 children together and spent most of the years in the East County Portland Oregon area. He was in sales for the main part of his working years. P.J. divorced and then spent several years as a substance abuse counselor in various states and facilities. He remarried for a short time, then went off on his own. When he retired, he moved to Dillon Montana to be near family. He was very active in the VFW and revived the poppy program, was known to many at the local Safeway and at the annual fair, selling poppies, raffle tickets and supporting the VFW’s endeavors. P.J. is survived by, 2 sisters, Ardith (John) Ford of AZ, Mary Lou Murphy of Washington, 3 daughters, Terri (Mark) Furlong of Nevada, Eran Mahoney, of Dillon and Shannon (Dan) Keller of Dillon, and one son, Mike (Chhavy) Mahoney of Oregon, 1 stepdaughter, Karen Gaffney of Oregon, 11 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and 1 great, great granddaughter plus many nieces and nephews. P.J. died peacefully, surrounded by family, on April 29, 2023. Donations can be made to the VFW Post 9040 at P.O. Box 4 Dillon MT 59725.
A memorial will be held at the 4-H Building at the Beaverhead County Fair Grounds, 1pm on Sunday,
May 7 th 2023, friends of PJ are welcome to attend.
