Ronald Benson

Ronald A. Benson, 74, died September 16, 2017, in Dillon, Montana, after a battle with cancer. Ronald was born in Dillon on December 26, 1942, to Arnold G. and Cora (Anderson) Benson. A 1961 graduate of Beaverhead County High School, Ron served as President of the Future Farmers of America, the Student Body President, and during graduation was presented the coveted Alumni Cup. Ron attended Montana State University where he continued active involvement finally serving as a 2nd State Vice President in Future Farmers of America. Ron earned the American Farmer Award in 1964. Ron graduated from Montana State University in 1966. Ron also served in the Montana National Guard. On January 1, 1967, Ron bought the Benson Ranch east of Dillon. In April of the same year, he married his high school sweetheart, Marilyn Miller. The couple settled into ranching and farming and raised four daughters over the next 5 decades. Ron cared deeply for the land and his livestock. He fought the spread of evasive weeds knowing the impact on the native grasses and vegetation. Ron studied and tended to his cattle raising beef that was both hormone and anti-biotic free. Together, Ron and Marilyn, established the Beaverhead County Angel Fund which provides essential educational materials to the students in need of Beaverhead County. He strongly supported the work of the Weed Board, 4-H, and the Dillon Volunteer Fire Department. Ron was preceded in death by a brother, Bobby, a son, Billy, and his parents. In addition to his wife of 50 years, Marilyn, Ron is survived by his daughters Kim (Dan) Christiansen, Kami (Tony) Luigs, Cindy (Victor) Delgado, and Kristi (Matt) Davis and 5 grandchildren: Kate Christiansen, Susan Christiansen, David Luigs, Matthew Luigs and Luke Davis.
