Shirley Cote

December 22, 1940 — December 26, 2022

Shirley Cote passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Dec 26, 2022, after battling Pulmonary Fibrosis of the lung. Shirley was born in Alder, MT to Raymond Louis Cote & Ruth Lilian Bettum on Dec 22, 1940. In 1945 her family moved to Dillon where Shirley and her brother Raymond and sister Darlene attended all their schooling.

In 1955, Shirley married Buster Brown and together they had 5 great children! Doug, Cody, Kolene, Mark and PJ. Shirley and Buster divorced in 1980.

Shirley married Roy Cornell in 1988 after dating for 5 years. Shirley was very involved in the Rural Carriers Union and was secretary/treasurer for the state of Montana for several years before retiring in 2001. She loved her job and always said, “I have the best job in the Post Office!” Being the secretary/treasurer for the union allowed Shirley and Roy to attend many conventions. They also enjoyed over 21 cruises and several Elderhostel (Road Scholar Programs) as Leaders and Helpers.

She enjoyed many gambling trips to Jackpot and Wendover, NV with school friends Donna McKnight, Adele Sawyer and Harriet “Sis” Krattiger.

In 2020 Shirley and Roy divorced, and Shirley moved to Mesa, AZ for 7 years where she enjoyed the lower elevation (lung condition). She enjoyed activities like playing cards with her new friends who were affectionately referred to as the “Laugh a Lots”: Judy, Jerry, Jean & Shirley. In 2017 she moved back to Dillon to be closer to family again and enjoyed playing cards at the Senior Citizen Center. Yes, she LOVED playing Monday, Wednesday, and Friday cards!

Shirley is preceded in death by her parents, son Doug, brother Ray, and sister Darlene.

She is survived by her children, Cody (Diana) Brown, Kolene Brown, Mark (Brenda) Brown, & PJ Brown, and grandchildren Dustin and Courtney Brown, Crystal Riddle and Kelsey Brown, Tara & Saxon McFarland & Kassidy Brown, three great grandchildren, Stone Brown, Jordyn & Quincee Martinez, sister-in-law Kay Cote, nieces Tricia (Alan) Carlson, Leslie (Ken) Brown, DaNiel (Bob) Reynolds, nephew Mike (Betty) Mooney, and good friends Roy Cornell & Sally Smith.

Services will be held Friday at 1:00 PM at Our Saviors Lutheran Church. Coffee, juice & cookies will be offered in the gym after the service at Shirley’s request. In lieu of flowers, Shirley asks that donations be made to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church and the Senior Citizen Center building fund.
