Val Prophet

August 15, 1940 — May 1, 2021

Val Prophet, 80, died peacefully at home on May 1, 2021 (his mother’s birthday). Val was born August 15, 1940 in Rigby, Idaho to Harold “Shorty” Prophet and Alta Maureen Stocks. He was third of 4 boys born to the family. Val graduated from Beaverhead County Highschool and received his college degree from Western Montana College. He also graduated from auctioneer school in 1959. Val served in the United States Army from 1962 To 1964. Val was the art teacher at the Dillon Middle school for 30+ years. His passion for art has blessed the lives of his family, friends and community for many years. Val was a man of many talents. He was a potter, painter, poet, song writer, musician, farrier and auctioneer. But what he loved most was being a husband, father and grandfather. Val married the love of his life, Sandra Jean Huntsman, on October 28, 1960. He fell in love with her in high school and has loved her ever since. After a stint in El Paso, TX, Val and Sandy moved back to Dillon where they raised their two daughters Pam and Shauna. Val was also the beloved Grandpa to six and a Great-Grandpa (Geeps) to six. He cherished each member of his family. Besides his family and a career as an art teacher, Val loved the outdoors and enjoyed every opportunity he got to be a cowboy. He also loved to hunt, fish, camp, hike and pack into Sand Lake. One of the things Val was best known for among family and friends was his sense of humor. He had a gift to make people smile and laugh, even during hard times. Val was one of the original members of the Beaverhead Search and Rescue, served on the board of the Bicentennial Apartments for 30+ years, a member of the Elks for 60 years and volunteered his talent as an auctioneer for numerous benefits. He recently served other vets by driving the van. Val has touched many lives as he has shared his talents and served others.
